Regarding Hacks

There's been a bit of buzz regarding hacks for phpBB 3. As you may have read elsewhere, hacks written for phpBB 2 won't work on phpBB 3. With that in mind, I've been giving a bit of though to which of my hacks I might port over to the new phpBB. A lot of hacks (or similar features) are integrated into phpBB 3 by default, so not everything can or needs to be ported over.

So far, I've determined that the following hacks will not be updated for phpBB 3 because similar features are built into the forum by default.

• Add Last Visit Date to User Profiles
  
• Contact List
  I am considering an upgrade script to convert the Contact List data to phpBB 3 and a modification to extend the Friend/Foe features to replicate more of the features in Contact List.
  
• Firefox Autocomplete Bypass
  
• Global Admin Template
  
• Hide Inactive Accounts
  
• Navigation Link Fix
  
• Post Remover

These not be updated for phpBB 3 for the reasons listed here.

• Add phpMyAdmin Link
  phpBB 3 has a totally new system for displaying the admin menu. Adding a single link is not really practical in this system.
  
• Disallow Specific HTML
  HTML is not supported in phpBB 3. There may be modifications that allow HTML use; this sort of thing should be built into one of those.
  
• Welcome PM on First Login
  DualFusion has already created a phpBB 3 variant of Welcome PM that includes the First Login feature. I highly recommend it; you can find more details at his topic at phpBBModders.
  

In addition, any of the discontinued hacks will not be updated.

I hope to update all of my other phpBB 2 modifications to phpBB 3. That will take some time, however.

This phpbb3 sounds like good thing, moving further and so on...I think it's good but not for all if you like to set up new forum i think it will be good to go to phpbb3, but with many modifications and personal code changes it's some kind abusing.

i think you all need to look at this phpbb2 usage, and if you forum will grow much bigger then you can think of upgrading it to phpbb3 So i think someone simple don't need this update, as it's good as it is, but phpbb guys needs to go further of course, and new guys are comming every day

Yeah, I agree. I probably won't upgrade any of my existing forums to phpBB 3, it would be too much work to port the mods and custom styles. I really feel for some people I know that are planning to upgrade. They have a lot of work ahead of them.

I will probably use phpBB 3 for any new forums, though. It will be much easier to start with it than to try an upgrade.

I wanted to bring attention to this again. Now that RC1 is here, I have a better idea of what needs to be updated and what doesn't, so I have updated the lists in the first post.
